How to adjust the temperature of the water heater?

It can be interesting to adjust the temperature of the water heater, knowing that in most homes, it is the primary source of electricity consumption. The goal is therefore to save money by reducing your electricity bill. This can also be essential if the hot water is much too high or even boiling.

What temperature to aim for?

The temperature of the water heater must be at least 55 ° C (131 ° F). Indeed if lukewarm water is not a problem for you to shower or wash the dishes, it should be known that if the water has a temperature lower than this one, then that will support the development of salmonella and legionellosis .

Salmonella is a bacteria that causes paratyphoid fever, typhoid fever and salmonellosis in humans. Salmonellosis is an infection responsible for typhus fever, gastroenteritis, food poisoning. People who suffer from it then have diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.

Legionellosis is an infectious disease. It is generated by hydro-telluric bacteria. People then have influenza-like illness, with a fever. This can worsen with age, smoking and immunosuppression with an advanced stage called legionellosis. Legionellosis is defined by an acute and severe lung infection which can cause death in 11% of cases.

That’s why you shouldn’t be joking about the temperature of your hot water.

How to do ?

So you need a probe to read the temperature. The best is a cooking thermometer. Its price is low and its use is easy. You will therefore need to adjust the thermostat (see image above) by lowering it. The thermostat varies in shape and color depending on the make or model of the water heater. It is generally a rotary button surrounded by a number.

Cut power

Before lowering the thermostat, you must first turn off the power at the water heater. To do this, we will deactivate part of the circuit breaker by putting the spark plug on the electric meter, in the off position. It is important to turn off the power so as not to damage the electrical system of the water heater. Because by adjusting the temperature, we also vary the intensity of the current.

Decrease the thermostat

So you have to lower the level. There is no specific method for determining the temperature at which the thermostat is located since the amount of water present in the water heater varies according to the product code of the appliance. We decrease by a notch, or a notch and a half for example.

To take the temperature

After lowering the thermostat, wait 3-4 days. Finally, the temperature is noted at the outlet of a tap or the shower head, after running the water for 1 or 2 minutes (when the water seems to be the warmest).

Result

When the temperature is at the desired level, you can expect a significant reduction in electricity consumption, this can go up to 20% of the total cost of electricity for homes with a large cumulus of water.
