The second version of the Samsung Smart SSD includes a Xilinx Versal Adaptive processor based on ARM technology. The SSD can thus process the data directly.
Data transmission between the main processor, GPU, and memory is reduced. It is the query processing time in the database that is shortened. CPU usage can be decreased up to 97%. The energy efficiency of applications that can be data-intensive is thus considerably increased.
The Smart SSD is therefore able to process data directly. Bottlenecks that can occur when moving data between processors and storage devices are avoided. In the end, system performance is greatly improved. Energy efficiency is significantly higher.
This disk can have a crucial role in machine learning tasks, AI, data transfer via 5G and 6G. The data processing time compared to a conventional SSD disk is reduced by 50%, the energy consumption is reduced by 70%.
At the moment, this technology is intended for IT companies, providers of video communication platforms. Samsung received the Innovation Award at CES 2021.
