Electrodes capable of charging a battery in few seconds
Researchers at Drexel in Philadelphia have created MXene electrodes that have the ability to recharge a smartphone’s battery in less than a few seconds.
The MXene comes from titanium aluminum carbide with the thickness of an atom.
The MXene has the property of being very conductive. The electrode is the result of the accumulation of several layers which allow to store more energy compared to a conventional super-capacitor. Thus the batteries see their electric potential increase. The use of a hydrogel that surrounds the MXene optimizes the storage of ions and increases the capacity of the batteries.
We now have to see if we can move to mass manufacturing, which is another step that presents other challenges.
