Jean-Luc Mélenchon on agriculture, energy, ecology
The measures proposed by the political candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon of the France Insoumise party, on the themes of ecology, energy and agriculture for the French presidential election of 2022.
Agriculture :
We need ecological protectionism, everything that is produced under unacceptable conditions, such as products grown with glyphosate, no longer enter France. French peasants are called upon to produce as a replacement. 50% of our fruit and vegetable supplies come from outside. Why produce corn that is used to raise cows halfway around the world? We need food sovereignty. Food is the starting point of all societies. We must disobey all regulations that would require us to endure what destroys us.
Energy:
There were the incidents of Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, Fukushima. Time has shown us that nuclear power is dangerous. If there is an incident, hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people will have to be moved. We are dependent on the uranium we have to buy abroad. It is not a question of giving up, but of getting out of nuclear power.
We need everyone who works there. We need science, basic research to know how to cool radioactive waste because it's there for 10,000 years, for 20,000 years.
In the cost of nuclear power, we never calculate the future dismantling of power plants, the storage of nuclear waste. We all know the risk exists and getting out of it would be a good thing. It takes science and resources.
The question should not be reduced to: some are for nuclear power plants, others are for wind turbines. We must redeploy an apparatus for the production of energies that are harmless against nature and against the future. We must get out of nuclear power. 4 out of 10 plants were unable to operate this year due to droughts and extreme heat. The dangers that are contained, no one knows how to control them at this stage.
The alternative means are hydroelectricity, we must not privatize the dams, increase their number. We do not need the great shroud of nuclear power plants. There are 150 billion euros to recaren them and increase them from 40 years of existence to 60 years. This increases the dangers. There needs to be a general redeployment of tidal turbines. Formerly it was called mills, there were everywhere in France, there were thousands of them. There is geothermal energy.
There is above all sobriety in energy consumption. Consume less energy, less waste. It is a great plan that will put tens of thousands of people back to work.
We have found no other solution than to bury nuclear waste. Which is an increasing risk taking.

We need a climate tribunal. We need an international treaty on the non-proliferation of carbon energies. We need the model of ecological planning. There is no endless growth. We must move towards a more sober, more humanitarian model, with other ways of operating, other ways of producing, other products, other professional qualifications, other objectives. This needs to be planned so that public and private companies can know their horizon.
