Migration of the server between VPS SSD 2018 from OVH and VPS Value, Essential, Comfort or Elite
The OVH web host offers a simplified automatic migration from your old VPS: VPS SSD 2018, or VPS Cloud or VPS Cloud RAM, to the new range: VPS Value, Essential, Comfort or Elite. The migration must keep the configuration of your virtual private server, with the same IP address, the same accesses.
Migration takes between 20 minutes and 6 hours depending on the type of VPS.
Unfortunately, in our case, after an hour of waiting, the migration was completely unsuccessful despite receiving an email confirming a successful migration. In the sense that you no longer have access to the VPS at the end, and the websites would no longer link to the FTP content in question. We had to start from scratch by reinstalling the VPS from A to Z. Imagine our fear and the headache that this can generate. We had to reinstall the SSH key pair, PHP server, Apache server, url rewrite module, website configuration files, Mysql, PhpMyAdmin, Let's Encrypt, Certbot. We had to reinstall the databases, update our web scripts which were no longer compatible with the latest versions of PHP. We had to replace Exim4 and configure it properly.
It took 6 hours just to get the websites up and running again and 2-3 days to get everything back to its original state. We lost a lot of traffic, and this could negatively impact the referencing of the respective websites.
It is therefore strongly recommended to back up everything beforehand (also the content of /etc/apache2, /etc/letsencrypt) and especially not to perform this type of simplified migration. The transfer to another server has never been easy to implement automatically. It is better to do it manually, website after website.
We therefore advise you not to give in to ease, to the song of the sirens and to go through the classic route of server transfer step by step.
