Number of mammals in the world

Here is the number of mammals on Earth :

Humans are without surprise the big mammal with the largest population.

The mice are far ahead of us with a 20 times greater presence on the globe. They have a sexual maturity at 8 weeks, a gestation time of 20 days. A mouse can give birth to 80 babies in its life.

The rabbits are also well positioned, with sexual maturity at 7 months and a gestation period of one month. A rabbit may have 48 kids during its life in the wild, and 144 if domesticated.

The rats are “only” a little less than ten billion. A female rat can give birth to 155 babies during its lifetime, which is much more than the mouse. Rats are found mostly in grasslands, contrary to what we might think. In town their population is quickly decimated in case of flood but their reproduction rate makes that they soon fill the gap.

Hamster is much more present than rats and mice, with up to 216 babies during the life of a female. Their pregnancy can reach up to 13 tiny hamster. That is why their population is colossal. They eat mostly seeds, but can also devour vegetables, fruits, stems, leaves, roots, insects, small vertebrates, frogs. Their food reserves can reach up to 200 lbs in some burrows. Sometimes they can devour each other to eliminate the weak ones.

There is a total of 396 billion of mammals on the planet.
