Main platinum producing countries
List of countries that produce the most platinum in the world. With annual production expressed in kilograms. We see that South Africa is the main producer of platinum, far ahead of all other countries.
Platinum is primarily used as a catalyst in chemistry. Its main use in automobiles is as a catalytic converter which allows the slow combustion of hydrocarbon molecules that would not have been burned in the engine and ultimately the transformation of these molecules into water vapor and carbon dioxide. In petrochemicals, platinum is used for the catalytic reforming of distillation naphthas into gasoline.
It is a metal that serves as a safe haven for banks and financial institutions. Platinum is useful in jewelry, particularly in luxury watches. Also in medicine for medical instruments, dental prostheses, in drugs to treat cancers.
