This elephant is mainly present in India, China and the countries of Oceania. It separated from its cousin, the African elephant, 2.5 million years ago. There are 3 subspecies which are Indian elephant, Sri Lankan elephant and Sumatran elephant. At the start of the 20th century, Thailand had 100,000 elephants; in 2010 there were only 4,000 left; in 2020 there were 3,440.

There are a total of 50,000 Asian elephants, including 20,000 in India. It is above all in danger because of the reduction of its environment, which are the tropical forests and the jungles.
