VY Canis Majoris is a red hyper giant very rich in oxygen. This star is very far from the sun, since it would take 3,900 years to reach its system with a vessel that would go at the speed of light. It is one of the brightest stars in the Milky Way. It is a very young protostar which will undoubtedly explode quite quickly into a supernova, in 100,000 years.
