Size comparison: Ceres vs Haumea



Here is the size comparison of the dwarf planets Ceres and Haumea.

Haumea is a trans-Neptunian dwarf planet. It is located in the Kuiper belt. It takes 284 years for Hauméa to go around the sun. It has the shape of a rugby ball, its dimensions are 2100 km by 1680 km by 1074 km. Two satellites orbit Haumea: Hi'iaka and Namaka. Haumea is the name of the goddess of fertility in Hawaiian mythology. This planet has a ring. It is mostly rocky, with a 70 km thick ice mantle at the poles and 170 km along its axis. The composition of Haumea's atmosphere is unknown. There are no high definition images of this planet.

Ceres is the smallest dwarf planet in the solar system. It is located in the main asteroid belt, between the planets Mars and Jupiter. Ceres is geologically dead. It is assumed to have an icy ocean between the core and the mantle. But it may be that this ocean is liquid if it holds ammonia in large quantities, thus serving as antifreeze. If so, then Ceres could be conducive to life.

There are mysterious bright spots in several craters, notably in the Occator crater which is 90 km wide, the Kupalo crater which is 26 km wide. Scientists assume that these clear spots are in fact mineral salts based on magnesium sulphate hexahydrate, clays rich in ammonia, materials composed of sodium carbonate, ammonium chloride, ammonium bicarbonate.

Mount Ahuna, which rises to 6,000 meters above sea level, is also of interest to astronomers, as it has a rather unusual conical shape.
