The Megalodon is an extinct species of mackerel shark that lived at the same time as Australopithecus afarensis. It is assumed that the maximum size of this shark was 20 meters and 30 centimeters (67 ft). Megalodon teeth are mostly found in large quantities in the Pacific, but also in Europe, Central America and North America. The main competitor of this marine animal was the Livyatan, a whale eater.

An ice age would have affected the food source of this animal during the Pliocene era. The cold would also have compromised the breeding areas which were previously warm.
