The paraceratherium is often presented as the largest land mammal to have lived on Earth. It may be preceded by Palaeoloxodon namadicus, a kind of giant elephant that lived 700,000 years ago.

We notice that its appearance is quite similar to that of the rhinoceros. Its life was quite similar to that of elephants with no predators. The reasons for its extinction after living more than 11 million years during the Oligocene are not known. But it is assumed that this would be due to climate change, the arrival of new herbivores such as gomphotheres which may have profoundly changed the habitat. Elephants tend to destroy trees and turn forests into grassland. With less food available, the paraceratheriums would then have become more worthy; and the arrival of predators such as Amphicyon and Hyainailurus may have ended its existence.
