By default, the Asian elephant is the closest animal on Earth to the woolly mammoth. Scientists would like to revive it, either by cloning it with the DNA found on specimens frozen in ice, but which is degraded; or by replacing the genes of the elephant with those of the mammoth which are still in good condition.

One wonders if this is a good idea in a warming world these days.
