[Solution] Western Digital External Hard Drive Keeps Disconnecting
You are trying to back up your data to an external hard drive, by copying and pasting files and folders from your computer to this Western Digital external hard drive. But this hard drive keeps disconnecting. The hard disk appears, then disappears.
Power options
Go to the control panel, then to "system" > "power options" > "change power plan" > "change advanced power settings". In the window that appears, go to "USB settings" > "USB selective suspend settings" > "settings", select: "Disabled".
Device Manager
If the problem persists, go to the device manager, expand the "USB bus controllers" part, right-click on "Root USB hub (USB 3.0)", in the "power management" tab, deselect "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
Obsolete 12V power adapter
If the constant hard drive disconnection issue continues, then most likely it is a hardware issue. It's probably the 12V power adapter that no longer works properly. See if the adapter transformer light disappears when the external hard drive unexpectedly disconnects. Check the temperature of the adapter. If the light goes out and/or the adapter is hot, then this confirms that the adapter is dying. This happens if the device is old.
