Squeaky tap

A tap can sometimes start to squeak, with quivering, clicking, shock. And the pipes of the apartment or house can amplify this noise, to make it quickly unbearable in everyday life.

The reasons

The water pressure is often the first responsible, with a much too high flow. It would normally be between two and three bars. Hot water systems can vibrate the pipes due to thermal shock when the hot water in the pipes has cooled down and meet the incoming hot water. The pipes expand and vibrate. Squeaking may be caused by water hammering that occurs when closing the water supply. Closing the valve causes overpressure of water. The plumbing of the house will then be traversed by a shock wave. Pipe joints can degrade. A worn faucet may also have defective parts causing this squeak.

Solutions

If the pressure is too high, contact the distribution company to obtain the water pressure level. If it is indeed high, then it will be necessary to install a pressure reducer . It is set up at the level of the water supply pipe that enters your building.

Check that the plumbing has been properly installed for vibration in the pipes. Fixing collars are used to ensure that the pipes are well bonded to the walls. Anti-vibration mounts can greatly reduce the noise. The sounds generated by the expansion of the pipes can be reduced using water-resistant adhesive tapes that are applied where the blows are felt.

The shock wave can be stopped using an anti-rams device . Another solution is to install the pressure reducer on the water supply pipe, in order to reduce the pressure and counteract this phenomenon.

If the plumbing, and in this case the faucets are more than 15-20 years old, it will be necessary to consider replacing the defective parts. It must be seen if the pressure reducer is still in good condition. If the problem persists, do not hesitate to call a professional plumber.
