Chives are normally a pretty easy plant to grow. However it happens that the chives die one after the other, despite regular watering, good maintenance.
Lack of sunshine
It is especially the lack of sun that will make it wither, stunt and wither. If the plant is left in a totally shaded area, such as a balcony with little light, or in a garden surrounded by trees or high walls, then the chive will turn yellow and fade in less than 3-4 weeks. The place should be only partially shaded.
Too much sunshine
On the contrary if the plant is left in a place that is always sunny, throughout the day, then the plant will burn and quickly dry. It is important to have partial shading. A greenhouse is ideal. But we can also place the plants in front of trees, with sunshine in the morning and shading in the evening. Or under moderate-sized fruit trees with a permanently dimmed light.
Too little water
Chives require to have roots in a land that remains mostly in optimal conditions. Therefore, it is best to water regularly to prevent the soil from being too dry.
Too much water
On the contrary, if you water it too much, the bulb of the chives will always be in the water. The leaves will first turn yellow. The bulb will then rot. It is necessary that the ground is thus not too humidified.
Temperature too cold
The chives fear the cold, so protect it if the temperatures go down too low and the air stays cool. Chives are placed under a glass bell. It can also be put in a greenhouse. The best way for the plant to continue to grow is in an environment with temperatures above 50 ° F.
Too many roots
The roots may be cramped if the chive is in a pot. We must think of removing the plant, replace the earth with potting soil, see if the roots are not too long. And if necessary, cut the roots so that the plant is comfortable in its pot.
