Yannick Jadot's measures on religion, secularism, wearing the veil at school during the environmentalists' primary which aims for the French presidential election of 2022.
We must continue to prohibit the wearing of the veil at school. Banning the veil for girls outside of school is unnecessary. Strict application of the law on secularism in private life means state neutrality and the freedom to believe or not to believe.
The law on secularism is a jewel of the republic because it establishes the neutrality of the state vis-à-vis society. One can believe or not believe, it poses the impartiality of the state and the neutrality of the religions in the public services. No one can force you to believe or not to believe. No one can force you to dress against your will. We must continue to respect very firmly the law on secularism of 1905.
The role of the president is to be the guarantor of institutions and the rule of law. It is not to decide for the institutions and for the rule of law. In democracy we recognize the right to blasphemy, freedom of expression, it is absolutely essential to defend the right to blasphemy. The way we live, the fact of defending an open society, where different opinions are expressed. Democracy is not about banning what you don't agree with. Guaranteeing and defending collective freedom allows the expression of divergent opinions. We must defend the right to blasphemy and caricature.
